LISTEN

An antique singing bowl matched pair, both tuned to E on a lower and higher octave. Extremely fine and rare, there is no other known matched pair like this, with the finest detailed engravings, perfectly tuned together, in the best quality type of antique bowl. This pair were likely made by the same maker and are approximately 500 years old. This type of bowl, which I call the Special Engraved bowls, are one of the finest types of singing bowls ever made. With long, bell like tones, a durable golden color, a perfectly smooth vibration and wonderful antique presence, these are among the best singing bowls ever made. They are even more special being matched as a perfect pair which is an exceptionally rare find in itself. The bowls show natural patina and stains. The bronze is so fine and in such good condition, they could be restored to near new and would look like gold if polished.

Tune In to the 1,000-Year-Old Metalworking Tradition

The first singing bowls were made around the 11th century, during one of the high periods of Buddhism in Nepal. The best examples coincide with high periods of culture, which is part of how I determine their age. The singing bowls are related to bowls from ancient Persia and Khorosan. Later forms are also related to similar bowls from Southeast Asia. Singing bowls spread through Asia over the last few hundred years. Antique singing bowls were crafted with an ancient process called annealing, where a bronze disc is repeatedly heated, cooled and hammered until the desired form is acheived. The ability for bronze to be reworked repeatedly allowed the artisans to craft these truly stunning forms. The durability of this fine bronze material has allowed them to endure for so long. Kept in good condition, they will last for another thousand years.
