LISTEN

One of the most unique and finest made bowls in the entire collection, this extremely rare singing bowl is one of a kind due to the large size. I searched for years to find more like it and you can see similar bowls in the collection in smaller sizes. Item L077 is an excellent match with this singing bowl. At close to six pounds, the rim is very wide and the entire bowl was constructed very thick. The tension created by the rim and the overall thickness of the metal can be heard in the tone which is an octave higher than typical bowls of this large size. It also rings very steady with amazing clarity due to the thickness. The tone is very beautiful and vibrant. The bowl is beautifully decorated with one of the most advanced type of finishing on any singing bowl. The very deeply cut lines create a heavy bead around the rim. This example has such raised lines on top of the rim and rings on the inside of the bowl. Truly one of the most finely crafted singing bowls in history and one of the only bowls of this quality in a large size.

Tune In to the 1,000-Year-Old Metalworking Tradition

The first singing bowls were made around the 11th century, during one of the high periods of Buddhism in Nepal. The best examples coincide with high periods of culture, which is part of how I determine their age. The singing bowls are related to bowls from ancient Persia and Khorosan. Later forms are also related to similar bowls from Southeast Asia. Singing bowls spread through Asia over the last few hundred years. Antique singing bowls were crafted with an ancient process called annealing, where a bronze disc is repeatedly heated, cooled and hammered until the desired form is acheived. The ability for bronze to be reworked repeatedly allowed the artisans to craft these truly stunning forms. The durability of this fine bronze material has allowed them to endure for so long. Kept in good condition, they will last for another thousand years.
