LISTEN

5 top quality large antique singing bowls, each a unique treasure and even more beautiful singing harmoniously together. The deepest 2 gorgeous low pitched bowls, both very lightweight with extra deep tones, anchor the set. The higher 3 provide a full range of tones and harmonic overtones - a symphony of sounds all singing beautifully together.

Specially matched for the most harmonious tone, they are similar in style and quality, matched as closely as possible from the available antiques. The physical vibration is superb, filling any space with peaceful yet very sonorous and clear vibrations. The range from low to high gives you a lot to work with, including deep tones that are very relaxing and calming, mid tones that really fill the air and sublime highs that retain the peaceful, healing qualities. Can be an anchor for a larger set with more large, medium and small singing bowls or use as a standalone set.

F: the deepest of the set, this is what I call a "special deep" singing bowl, with an extra deep fundamental and angelic harmonics that don't overwhelm. The golden color is very beautiful and overall an excellent old piece.

G#: another larger and deeper bowl, it is unusually lightweight with a gorgeous deep spotted patina. A very elegant piece, it has a very soothing quality and stunning presence.

B: One of the most finely made types of bowls, this enchanting beauty retains a bright color, a hallmark of the amazing craftsmanship. The shape, engravings and tone are superb, with a long ringing and full sound that still lingers in the deep end of the tonal spectrum.

D: An even more beautifully crafted antique singing bowl from the very best period, this knockout stands slightly taller than the others with a very balanced tone that you can really feel. The harmonics can ring incredibly steady, owing to the perfect symmetry of the bowl.

F: Providing an excellent resolution by matching the deepest tone on a higher octave, this gives you an excellent balancing quality to work with. One of my favorite ways to play bowls together, the harmony provided by this charming antique really completes the set. Slightly more rustic looking, possibly due to its untouched condition, it has a lovely rounded shape, deep engravings and excellent intact, spotted patina.

Tune In to the 1,000-Year-Old Metalworking Tradition

The first singing bowls were made around the 11th century, during one of the high periods of Buddhism in Nepal. The best examples coincide with high periods of culture, which is part of how I determine their age. The singing bowls are related to bowls from ancient Persia and Khorosan. Later forms are also related to similar bowls from Southeast Asia. Singing bowls spread through Asia over the last few hundred years. Antique singing bowls were crafted with an ancient process called annealing, where a bronze disc is repeatedly heated, cooled and hammered until the desired form is acheived. The ability for bronze to be reworked repeatedly allowed the artisans to craft these truly stunning forms. The durability of this fine bronze material has allowed them to endure for so long. Kept in good condition, they will last for another thousand years.
