A wonderful special engraved bowl with a superb tone and unusual engravings. The sound is full and long ringing, with a wonderful deep vibration thanks to the larger size. The harmonics come through clear and beautifully tuned. It has the typical triangular punch around the rim, which are sparse and worn from the centuries. There are similar punches around the middle of the outside which is not found on other bowls. Normally there are lines around the middle. This one has the hint of the geometric designs. It has a dent in the bottom which fortunately did not crack the bowl and does not interfere with the sound.

Tune In to the 1,000-Year-Old Metalworking Tradition

The first singing bowls were made around the 11th century, during one of the high periods of Buddhism in Nepal. The best examples coincide with high periods of culture, which is part of how I determine their age. The singing bowls are related to bowls from ancient Persia and Khorosan. Later forms are also related to similar bowls from Southeast Asia. Singing bowls spread through Asia over the last few hundred years. Antique singing bowls were crafted with an ancient process called annealing, where a bronze disc is repeatedly heated, cooled and hammered until the desired form is acheived. The ability for bronze to be reworked repeatedly allowed the artisans to craft these truly stunning forms. The durability of this fine bronze material has allowed them to endure for so long. Kept in good condition, they will last for another thousand years.
