A near identical match to M103, this is another of the very best lingam bowls ever made. The tone is full, rich and more warm than many lingam bowls. It has a very soothing and harmonizing quality with a nice shimmering high tone adding mystery. The tone is deeper than M103 and higher than M106. The three make a wonderful set. One of the earliest singing bowls made, it has some areas of heavy oxidation inside which may shorten the tone. The bowl has been historically cleaned so it is not as dark as M103. The shape is nearly perfect yet retains a handmade, organic quality. The fine quality of the engravings on the top of the rim and inside around the lingam may have also been found around the outside, meaning this would have been a very decorative piece as well. A stunning and rare treasure.

Tune In to the 1,000-Year-Old Metalworking Tradition

The first singing bowls were made around the 11th century, during one of the high periods of Buddhism in Nepal. The best examples coincide with high periods of culture, which is part of how I determine their age. The singing bowls are related to bowls from ancient Persia and Khorosan. Later forms are also related to similar bowls from Southeast Asia. Singing bowls spread through Asia over the last few hundred years. Antique singing bowls were crafted with an ancient process called annealing, where a bronze disc is repeatedly heated, cooled and hammered until the desired form is acheived. The ability for bronze to be reworked repeatedly allowed the artisans to craft these truly stunning forms. The durability of this fine bronze material has allowed them to endure for so long. Kept in good condition, they will last for another thousand years.
