A large, melodious antique singing bowl with a complex tone that plays with a lot of variety. The big size gives it a nice deep and strong vibration. The rim of the bowl looks to have been refinished, which you may not notice, but it likely had engravings around the rim. I'm calling it a late period bowl, but it's likely one of the earlier special engraved bowls, just slightly changed many years ago. The price is much lower due to the less than perfect condition.

Tune In to the 1,000-Year-Old Metalworking Tradition

The first singing bowls were made around the 11th century, during one of the high periods of Buddhism in Nepal. The best examples coincide with high periods of culture, which is part of how I determine their age. The singing bowls are related to bowls from ancient Persia and Khorosan. Later forms are also related to similar bowls from Southeast Asia. Singing bowls spread through Asia over the last few hundred years. Antique singing bowls were crafted with an ancient process called annealing, where a bronze disc is repeatedly heated, cooled and hammered until the desired form is acheived. The ability for bronze to be reworked repeatedly allowed the artisans to craft these truly stunning forms. The durability of this fine bronze material has allowed them to endure for so long. Kept in good condition, they will last for another thousand years.
