A very thick antique singing bowl with wonderful antique charm and a warm, wonderful tone. A shorter ring than many in the collection, it is still above average and with exceptional warmth. Playing with a variety of warbles, it can be a real old friend if you love the tone. It looks very much like one of the early Circle & Dot bowls but with no evidence of engravings. There is fold separation around the entire rim and a large Y shaped crack on the bottom which does not penetrate through to the inside and does not seem to affect the sound. Price greatly reduced due to condition.

Tune In to the 1,000-Year-Old Metalworking Tradition

The first singing bowls were made around the 11th century, during one of the high periods of Buddhism in Nepal. The best examples coincide with high periods of culture, which is part of how I determine their age. The singing bowls are related to bowls from ancient Persia and Khorosan. Later forms are also related to similar bowls from Southeast Asia. Singing bowls spread through Asia over the last few hundred years. Antique singing bowls were crafted with an ancient process called annealing, where a bronze disc is repeatedly heated, cooled and hammered until the desired form is acheived. The ability for bronze to be reworked repeatedly allowed the artisans to craft these truly stunning forms. The durability of this fine bronze material has allowed them to endure for so long. Kept in good condition, they will last for another thousand years.
