The Large Singing Bowls

The awesome

Large singing bowls

Jambati is the Nepali word for large singing bowls. However, the name designates a shape more than a size. The round bottomed shape was made in a huge range of sizes. Most were made around 10.5 inches diameter but the smallest is under 3 inches.

With the deepest and strongest tones of all the singing bowls, jambati have the power to really fill a room. They have an antique presence that is impressive.

With features that are considered a lost art, most jambati were made with shaped rims that cannot be reproduced today. Required hours of precision hammering, the workmanship is amazing.

While the exact history of singing bowls is never known, the distinctive shapes and hammer marks on many jambati allow me to compare them. In some cases I can see which were made in the same workshop and by the same hammers.
