Rudi Bach: Taking Retreatants on an Inner Journey

How did you discover antique singing bowls?

My father gave me my first one 30 years ago, when I was in my 20's. A few years later I went to a full length "sound bath" and was hooked.

What do you find special about the antique bowls and collecting them?

Each one has a soul and sound of its own. Combined, they can have a harmonic sympathy with each other. Listened to carefully you can hear certain sounds produced that no one bowl could make on its own.

How do you work with them (professionally or personally) and how do they benefit you and others?

Have been playing for large groups at a retreat center in Western Mass (150+ guests at a time). Despite how subtle these old bowls sound, they mesmerize people's attention, on multiple levels. The group as a whole slows down, and we move inwardly together.

Recently a guest said" “When it began, I felt all this anxiety coming up in me. As if I had been holding a lot down for several years. It’s was a little uncomfortable at first as all this jittery energy started pushing through me. I figured I needed to hang in there, even though I wanted to run. Then about halfway through, it bottomed out, and something in me started to feel more grounded. By the end, my body felt more solid, but also open.”

How has Joseph and The Singing Bowl Museum been part of your singing bowl journey?

Certainly my oldest, and many of the very finest bowls were acquired through Joseph. He has an excellent ear, and eye, for top quality instruments. It's clear he has devoted a great deal of time and attention into this collection. Have always felt like I'm in good hands.
