My many years of research has led to the conclusion that this is the earliest type of jambati singing bowl. The early shape can be seen to adapt over time, taking on new characteristics over the centuries. Those generational changes in shape and construction indicate that this is an earlier type. The presence of deep pitting and the heavy crust of oxidation support this conclusion. These changes require up to 1,000 years to develop in bell metal bronze. Early singing bowls like this were made by folding the rim. By this age, the fold often separates, which I have shown on other bowls. This bowl remarkably shows no fold separation, proving the mastery of the maker. This is one of the very few examples of this early type of singing bowl in existence and one of the very best. The tone rings for over a minute with a deep, sonorous call. It has a wonderful feeling vibration. The special qualities of this type of bowl are the very old appearance, wonderful antique mojo and very soothing feeling. Fairly heavy at over 5 pounds, it has a very solid feeling and can be a proud centerpiece in any environment.

Tune In to the 1,000-Year-Old Metalworking Tradition

The first singing bowls were made around the 11th century, during one of the high periods of Buddhism in Nepal. The best examples coincide with high periods of culture, which is part of how I determine their age. The singing bowls are related to bowls from ancient Persia and Khorosan. Later forms are also related to similar bowls from Southeast Asia. Singing bowls spread through Asia over the last few hundred years. Antique singing bowls were crafted with an ancient process called annealing, where a bronze disc is repeatedly heated, cooled and hammered until the desired form is acheived. The ability for bronze to be reworked repeatedly allowed the artisans to craft these truly stunning forms. The durability of this fine bronze material has allowed them to endure for so long. Kept in good condition, they will last for another thousand years.
