With a nice low tone and clear harmonic overtones, this is also a very interesting transitional period antique singing bowl. It has all the hallmarks of the earlier artisans and hints at the refinements coming in the later bowls. I imagine the maker was an old man, passing his craft to the next generation, or a young man, learning the old ways but applying them in a new style. Either way, it seems on the edge of two historic periods, frozen in time.

Tune In to the 1,000-Year-Old Metalworking Tradition

The first singing bowls were made around the 11th century, during one of the high periods of Buddhism in Nepal. The best examples coincide with high periods of culture, which is part of how I determine their age. The singing bowls are related to bowls from ancient Persia and Khorosan. Later forms are also related to similar bowls from Southeast Asia. Singing bowls spread through Asia over the last few hundred years. Antique singing bowls were crafted with an ancient process called annealing, where a bronze disc is repeatedly heated, cooled and hammered until the desired form is acheived. The ability for bronze to be reworked repeatedly allowed the artisans to craft these truly stunning forms. The durability of this fine bronze material has allowed them to endure for so long. Kept in good condition, they will last for another thousand years.
