7.5" Antique Singing Bowl in A#
Size: 7.5
Age : 16-17th century
Music Note : A#
A very unique transitional period antique singing bowl with a warm, melodious and relaxing tone ringing for over a minute with a tap. This bowl holds a few important historical clues. At first glance looks like one of the Special Engraved bowls with the ring of punched engravings around the rim. However, the style is more like the later period bowls. Under magnification, I can see the engravings are a different tool; circular rather than the older triangles. So it is copying the style of the earlier engraved bowls. This shows a remarkable continuity of craft and shows how ideas migrated to different makers over time. The same basic punch designs go back many centuries, this being one of the later examples. The shape is likewise unique, similar to the monks bowl style but without the exaggerated pear shape. It would have come before the monks bowls, placing it surely in the transitional period in the 16th century.
