Jambati Large Antique Singing Bowls
Filter
Jambati is the Nepali word for a large singing bowl. They were made in a wide range of sizes but most were made around 10.5 inches in diameter.
With the deepest and strongest tones of all the singing bowls, large jambati have the power to really fill a room. They have an antique presence that is impressive.
With features that are considered a lost art, most jambati were made with shaped rims that cannot be reproduced today. Requiring hours of precision hammering, the workmanship is amazing.
While the exact history of singing bowls is never known, the distinctive shapes and hammer marks on many jambati allow me to compare them. In some cases I can see which were made in the same workshop and by the same hammers. Remarkably, there are tiny examples of nearly identical bowls which are smaller than 4 inches diameter.
Fine antique singing bowls were made more finely than any made today. The fine hammering and better symmetry make antique bowls sound better.
The aging process also improves the tone. As the bowls age, they sound more and more mellow. The vibration becomes more and more relaxing.
Nothing sounds as beautiful as an antique singing bowl.
