An interesting antique singing bowl with a unique curved rim, showing continued experiementation with the form. Having abandoned the techniques of folding the rim, later bowl makers tried various ways to make a more symmetrical form. This one shows a lot of shaping around the rim to give it a nice symmetrical shape. Also unusually tall, it may be a late bowl from the same workshop as the earlier circle & dot bowls, a general bowl shape that persisted for centuries by being made on the same stone mold.

The first singing bowls were made around the 11th century, during one of the high periods of Buddhism in Nepal. The best examples coincide with high periods of culture, which is part of how I determine their age. The singing bowls are related to bowls from ancient Persia and Khorosan. Later forms are also related to similar bowls from Southeast Asia. Singing bowls spread through Asia over the last few hundred years. Antique singing bowls were crafted with an ancient process called annealing, where a bronze disc is repeatedly heated, cooled and hammered until the desired form is acheived. The ability for bronze to be reworked repeatedly allowed the artisans to craft these truly stunning forms. The durability of this fine bronze material has allowed them to endure for so long. Kept in good condition, they will last for another thousand years.

Antique singing bowls have a sound and vibration unlike anything in the world. Experience the most peaceful and beautiful sounds known to humanity.

The Singing Bowl Museum is home to the finest antique singing bowls in the world. No other collection comes close to the size and quality represented here.

Joseph was the first person to record singing bowls for the internet and continues to record each one. The sounds are not manipulated or edited in any way – the bowls really sound this great!
